When you arrive on our beautiful island, one of the first things you’ll encounter are the Skopelos felines soaking up the sun along the port, winding themselves around your legs for attention, or chasing each other around restaurant tables, hoping to catch a stray ”gavros”. These cats are as much a part of Skopelos’ character as our green landscapes and traditional architecture.
BUT they desperately need our help all year-round.
Our common ground, as animal welfare advocates, brought us together and turned our individual efforts into a shared project; to transform the lives of the charismatic stray cats of Skopelos while strengthening our island community.

They have been painlessly ear tipped by the veterinary surgeon to show they have been neutered. After the short operation they are returned to their exact location, as it is the area they know, and they are familiar with. This is part of the programme internationally known by the acronym TNVR: trap, neuter, vaccinate and return. Neutering not only contributes to feline population control, but also reduces the level of aggression, avoiding fights, and therefore wounds and infections.
Our path to establishing GATACARE SKOPELOS has not been easy: we faced bureaucratic hurdles, interpersonal challenges, financial crises, and moments of frustration, sadness, and pure joy. Throughout it all, our commitment has kept us going. We’ve visited local associations on other islands with a similar situation and learned from their experience. We enlisted a design expert who brought our story to life in pictures. We have envisioned solutions which benefit everyone, the cats, the residents, and the visitors who fall in love with our island. Because a healthy society cares for, and respects all the creatures that inhabit it.
Today, as GATACARE SKOPELOS, we are ready, willing, and with your help, able to implement comprehensive programmes that will sterilize, feed, vaccinate, and provide veterinary care. We also plan to establish adoption programs specially oriented for those felines whose conditions make them unable to survive with dignity on the streets.
Living on a Skopelos that cares, sets an example, and demonstrates how compassion and solidarity can be a source of community pride, is not just important to us: it’s essential to our feline community.
